Quick Setup

Prerequisites

  1. Supabase Project: Messaging tables must exist (run migrations)
  2. Authentication: User must be signed in (Supabase Auth)
  3. HTTPS: Required in production (Web Crypto API restriction)
  4. Modern Browser: Chrome 60+, Firefox 57+, Safari 11+ (Web Crypto API support)

Verification Steps

Step 1: Check Database Tables

# Connect to Supabase and verify tables exist
docker compose exec scripthammer pnpm exec supabase db diff

# Expected tables:
# - user_connections (friend requests)
# - conversations (chat threads)
# - messages (encrypted messages)
# - user_encryption_keys (public keys)
# - message_read_status (delivery/read receipts)
# - user_profiles (display names, usernames)

Step 2: Test Encryption Locally

// Test file: /tests/integration/messaging/encryption.test.ts
import { describe, it, expect } from 'vitest';
import { encryptionService } from '@/lib/messaging/encryption';

describe('Encryption Service', () => {
  it('should generate key pair', async () => {
    const keyPair = await crypto.subtle.generateKey(
      { name: 'ECDH', namedCurve: 'P-256' },
      true,
      ['deriveBits', 'deriveKey']
    );
    expect(keyPair.privateKey).toBeDefined();
    expect(keyPair.publicKey).toBeDefined();
  });

  it('should encrypt and decrypt message', async () => {
    const plaintext = 'Test message';
    const sharedSecret = await crypto.subtle.generateKey(
      { name: 'AES-GCM', length: 256 },
      true,
      ['encrypt', 'decrypt']
    );

    const encrypted = await encryptionService.encryptMessage(
      plaintext,
      sharedSecret
    );
    const decrypted = await encryptionService.decryptMessage(
      encrypted.ciphertext,
      encrypted.iv,
      sharedSecret
    );

    expect(decrypted).toBe(plaintext);
  });
});

Step 3: Run E2E Tests

# Start dev server first
docker compose exec scripthammer pnpm run dev

# Run messaging E2E tests in another terminal
docker compose exec scripthammer pnpm exec playwright test e2e/messaging/

# Expected: 5 tests pass
# ✓ Should send and receive encrypted message between two users
# ✓ Should verify zero-knowledge encryption in database
# ✓ Should show delivery status indicators
# ✓ Should load message history with pagination
# ✓ Should never send private keys to server

Step 4: Manual Test Checklist

  • Sign in as User A
  • Navigate to /messages/connections
  • Send friend request to User B (search by username)
  • Sign in as User B (different browser/incognito)
  • Accept friend request from User A
  • Click conversation with User A
  • Send message: "Hello from User B"
  • Switch to User A's browser
  • Verify message appears decrypted
  • Send reply: "Hello from User A"
  • Verify delivery status indicators (✓ → ✓✓ → ✓✓ blue)
  • Verify read receipts update in real-time

Core Concepts

1. Encryption Flow

First Message Send (1-2 second delay):

// User clicks "Send" → MessageService.sendMessage()

// Step 1: Check for private key in IndexedDB
const privateKey = await encryptionService.getPrivateKey(userId);

if (!privateKey) {
  // Step 2: Generate ECDH P-256 key pair (computationally expensive!)
  const keyPair = await crypto.subtle.generateKey(
    { name: 'ECDH', namedCurve: 'P-256' },
    true,
    ['deriveBits', 'deriveKey']
  );

  // Step 3: Store private key in IndexedDB (client-side only)
  await encryptionService.storePrivateKey(userId, privateKey);

  // Step 4: Upload public key to Supabase
  await supabase.from('user_encryption_keys').insert({
    user_id: userId,
    public_key_jwk: publicKey,
  });
}

// Step 5: Fetch recipient's public key from Supabase
const recipientPublicKey =
  await keyManagementService.getUserPublicKey(recipientId);

// Step 6: Derive shared secret (ECDH key exchange)
const sharedSecret = await crypto.subtle.deriveKey(
  { name: 'ECDH', public: recipientPublicKey },
  privateKey,
  { name: 'AES-GCM', length: 256 },
  false,
  ['encrypt', 'decrypt']
);

// Step 7: Generate random 96-bit initialization vector (IV)
const iv = crypto.getRandomValues(new Uint8Array(12));

// Step 8: Encrypt message with AES-GCM-256
const ciphertext = await crypto.subtle.encrypt(
  { name: 'AES-GCM', iv },
  sharedSecret,
  new TextEncoder().encode(plaintext)
);

// Step 9: Store ciphertext + IV in database (server never sees plaintext)
await supabase.from('messages').insert({
  conversation_id: conversationId,
  sender_id: userId,
  encrypted_content: base64Encode(ciphertext),
  initialization_vector: base64Encode(iv),
  sequence_number: nextSeq,
});

Subsequent Messages (instant):

  • Private key already in IndexedDB ✓
  • Public key already in Supabase ✓
  • Only steps 5-9 run (no key generation)
  • Encryption completes in <50ms

2. Offline Queue

Messages sent while offline are queued and automatically synced on reconnection:

// In MessageService.sendMessage() - automatic fallback
try {
  const result = await supabase.from('messages').insert(message);
} catch (error) {
  if (error.code === 'NETWORK_ERROR') {
    // Automatically queue for later sync
    await offlineQueueService.enqueue({
      conversation_id: conversationId,
      content: plaintext,
      encrypted_content: ciphertext,
      initialization_vector: iv,
      timestamp: Date.now(),
    });

    return { queued: true, message: null };
  }
}

// Service worker detects online event
self.addEventListener('online', async () => {
  const queuedMessages = await offlineQueueService.getAll();

  for (const msg of queuedMessages) {
    await supabase.from('messages').insert(msg);
    await offlineQueueService.remove(msg.id);
  }
});

3. Real-time Subscriptions

Supabase Realtime provides sub-500ms message delivery:

// In useMessages hook
useEffect(() => {
  const subscription = supabase
    .channel(`conversation:${conversationId}`)
    .on(
      'postgres_changes',
      {
        event: 'INSERT',
        schema: 'public',
        table: 'messages',
        filter: `conversation_id=eq.${conversationId}`,
      },
      (payload) => {
        // New message received → decrypt and add to UI
        const newMessage = payload.new;
        const decrypted = await decryptMessage(newMessage);
        setMessages((prev) => [...prev, decrypted]);
      }
    )
    .subscribe();

  return () => subscription.unsubscribe();
}, [conversationId]);

4. Friend Request System

Users must be connected before messaging:

// Step 1: User A searches for User B by username
const result = await connectionService.searchUsers({ query: 'userB' });

// Step 2: User A sends friend request
const connection = await connectionService.sendFriendRequest({
  addressee_id: result.users[0].id,
});
// Status: 'pending'

// Step 3: User B accepts request
await connectionService.respondToRequest({
  connection_id: connection.id,
  action: 'accept', // or 'decline' or 'block'
});
// Status: 'accepted'

// Step 4: Conversation auto-created via database trigger
// Both users can now send encrypted messages

Testing Guide

Unit Tests

Test encryption utilities in isolation:

# Run encryption unit tests
docker compose exec scripthammer pnpm test src/lib/messaging/__tests__/

# Test files:
# - encryption.test.ts (encrypt/decrypt, key generation)
# - validation.test.ts (input sanitization, UUID validation)
# - offline-queue.test.ts (IndexedDB queue operations)

Example unit test:

// /src/lib/messaging/__tests__/encryption.test.ts
import { describe, it, expect } from 'vitest';
import { encryptionService } from '../encryption';

describe('encryptionService.encryptMessage', () => {
  it('should produce different ciphertext for same plaintext (random IV)', async () => {
    const plaintext = 'Test message';
    const sharedSecret = await generateTestKey();

    const encrypted1 = await encryptionService.encryptMessage(
      plaintext,
      sharedSecret
    );
    const encrypted2 = await encryptionService.encryptMessage(
      plaintext,
      sharedSecret
    );

    // Ciphertext should differ (different IVs)
    expect(encrypted1.ciphertext).not.toBe(encrypted2.ciphertext);
    expect(encrypted1.iv).not.toBe(encrypted2.iv);

    // But both should decrypt to same plaintext
    const decrypted1 = await encryptionService.decryptMessage(
      encrypted1.ciphertext,
      encrypted1.iv,
      sharedSecret
    );
    const decrypted2 = await encryptionService.decryptMessage(
      encrypted2.ciphertext,
      encrypted2.iv,
      sharedSecret
    );

    expect(decrypted1).toBe(plaintext);
    expect(decrypted2).toBe(plaintext);
  });
});

Integration Tests

Test services with real Supabase client:

# Run integration tests (requires Supabase env vars)
docker compose exec scripthammer pnpm test tests/integration/messaging/

# Test files:
# - message-service.integration.test.ts
# - connection-service.integration.test.ts
# - key-management.integration.test.ts

Example integration test:

// /tests/integration/messaging/message-service.integration.test.ts
import { describe, it, expect, beforeEach } from 'vitest';
import { messageService } from '@/services/messaging/message-service';
import { createClient } from '@/lib/supabase/client';

describe('MessageService Integration', () => {
  beforeEach(async () => {
    // Sign in as test user
    const supabase = createClient();
    await supabase.auth.signInWithPassword({
      email: 'test@example.com',
      password: 'TestPassword123!',
    });
  });

  it('should send and retrieve encrypted message', async () => {
    const conversationId = 'test-conversation-uuid';
    const plaintext = 'Integration test message';

    // Send message
    const result = await messageService.sendMessage({
      conversation_id: conversationId,
      content: plaintext,
    });

    expect(result.queued).toBe(false);
    expect(result.message).toBeDefined();

    // Retrieve message history
    const history = await messageService.getMessageHistory(conversationId);

    expect(history.messages.length).toBeGreaterThan(0);
    const lastMessage = history.messages[history.messages.length - 1];
    expect(lastMessage.content).toBe(plaintext); // Decrypted
  });
});

E2E Tests

Test full user flows in real browser:

# Run E2E tests (requires running dev server)
docker compose exec scripthammer pnpm exec playwright test e2e/messaging/

# Test files:
# - encrypted-messaging.spec.ts (5 comprehensive scenarios)
# - friend-requests.spec.ts (connection flow)

Key E2E tests:

  1. Two-user encrypted messaging: User A sends message → User B receives decrypted
  2. Zero-knowledge verification: Query database directly, verify plaintext NOT stored
  3. Delivery status: Verify ✓ → ✓✓ → ✓✓ blue progression
  4. Pagination: Send 55 messages, verify "Load More" button appears
  5. Network security: Monitor HTTP requests, verify private keys never sent

Manual Testing Checklist

Encryption Setup:

  • First message shows "Setting up encryption..." for 1-2 seconds
  • Subsequent messages send instantly (<100ms)
  • Private key persists across page reloads (IndexedDB)
  • Error shown if recipient has no encryption keys

Offline Queue:

  • Disable network in DevTools
  • Send message → queued with indicator
  • Enable network → message auto-syncs
  • Queued messages appear in conversation history

Real-time Delivery:

  • User A sends message
  • User B sees message within 500ms (no refresh needed)
  • Delivery status updates in real-time
  • Read receipts update when User B views message

Security:

  • Open DevTools → Network tab
  • Send message
  • Verify private key never in request payload (search for "d":)
  • Open Application tab → IndexedDB → encryption_keys
  • Verify private key stored locally
  • Open Supabase dashboard → messages table
  • Verify encrypted_content is base64 ciphertext (not plaintext)

Common Patterns

Pattern 1: Add Connection Status to UI

Show real-time connection status (typing, online, last seen):

// /src/hooks/useConnectionStatus.ts
import { useEffect, useState } from 'react';
import { createClient } from '@/lib/supabase/client';

export function useConnectionStatus(userId: string) {
  const [status, setStatus] = useState<'online' | 'offline' | 'typing'>('offline');
  const [lastSeen, setLastSeen] = useState<Date | null>(null);

  useEffect(() => {
    const supabase = createClient();

    // Subscribe to user's presence
    const subscription = supabase
      .channel(`user:${userId}:status`)
      .on('presence', { event: 'sync' }, () => {
        const state = subscription.presenceState();
        const userPresence = state[userId];

        if (userPresence) {
          setStatus(userPresence.status);
          setLastSeen(new Date(userPresence.last_seen));
        } else {
          setStatus('offline');
        }
      })
      .subscribe();

    return () => subscription.unsubscribe();
  }, [userId]);

  return { status, lastSeen };
}

// Usage in ChatWindow
function ChatWindow({ conversationId, participantId }) {
  const { status, lastSeen } = useConnectionStatus(participantId);

  return (
    <div className="chat-header">
      <h2>Conversation with {participantName}</h2>
      {status === 'online' && <span className="badge badge-success">Online</span>}
      {status === 'typing' && <span className="badge badge-info">Typing...</span>}
      {status === 'offline' && lastSeen && (
        <span className="text-sm opacity-70">
          Last seen {formatDistanceToNow(lastSeen)} ago
        </span>
      )}
    </div>
  );
}

Pattern 2: Add Message Reactions

Implement emoji reactions like 👍❤️😂:

// Database migration: Add reactions column
ALTER TABLE messages ADD COLUMN reactions JSONB DEFAULT '{}';

// Example reactions structure:
// { "👍": ["user-id-1", "user-id-2"], "❤️": ["user-id-3"] }

// /src/services/messaging/reactions.ts
export async function addReaction(
  messageId: string,
  emoji: string,
  userId: string
) {
  const supabase = createClient();

  // Get current reactions
  const { data: message } = await supabase
    .from('messages')
    .select('reactions')
    .eq('id', messageId)
    .single();

  const reactions = message?.reactions || {};

  // Add user to emoji array
  if (!reactions[emoji]) {
    reactions[emoji] = [];
  }
  if (!reactions[emoji].includes(userId)) {
    reactions[emoji].push(userId);
  }

  // Update database
  await supabase
    .from('messages')
    .update({ reactions })
    .eq('id', messageId);
}

// Usage in MessageBubble component
function MessageBubble({ message }) {
  const { user } = useAuth();

  const handleReact = (emoji: string) => {
    addReaction(message.id, emoji, user.id);
  };

  return (
    <div className="message-bubble">
      <p>{message.content}</p>
      <div className="reactions">
        {Object.entries(message.reactions || {}).map(([emoji, userIds]) => (
          <button
            key={emoji}
            className={`reaction ${userIds.includes(user.id) ? 'active' : ''}`}
            onClick={() => handleReact(emoji)}
          >
            {emoji} {userIds.length}
          </button>
        ))}
        <button className="add-reaction" onClick={() => showEmojiPicker()}>
          +
        </button>
      </div>
    </div>
  );
}

Pattern 3: Add Typing Indicators

Show "User is typing..." in real-time:

// /src/hooks/useTypingIndicator.ts
import { useEffect } from 'react';
import { createClient } from '@/lib/supabase/client';

How to Extend

Extension 1: Implement New Encryption Algorithm

Switch from ECDH P-256 + AES-GCM-256 to X25519 + ChaCha20-Poly1305:

Step 1: Update encryption library

// /src/lib/messaging/encryption-v2.ts
export class EncryptionServiceV2 {
  async generateKeyPair(): Promise<CryptoKeyPair> {
    // Use X25519 instead of P-256
    return await crypto.subtle.generateKey({ name: 'X25519' }, true, [
      'deriveBits',
    ]);
  }

  async encryptMessage(
    plaintext: string,
    sharedSecret: CryptoKey
  ): Promise<{ ciphertext: string; nonce: string }> {
    // Use ChaCha20-Poly1305 instead of AES-GCM
    const nonce = crypto.getRandomValues(new Uint8Array(12));
    const ciphertext = await crypto.subtle.encrypt(
      { name: 'ChaCha20-Poly1305', nonce },
      sharedSecret,
      new TextEncoder().encode(plaintext)
    );

    return {
      ciphertext: base64Encode(ciphertext),
      nonce: base64Encode(nonce),
    };
  }
}

Step 2: Add database migration

-- Add encryption_version column to track algorithm used
ALTER TABLE user_encryption_keys ADD COLUMN encryption_version INTEGER DEFAULT 1;
ALTER TABLE messages ADD COLUMN encryption_version INTEGER DEFAULT 1;

-- Version 1: ECDH P-256 + AES-GCM-256 (current)
-- Version 2: X25519 + ChaCha20-Poly1305 (new)

Step 3: Update key management service

// /src/services/messaging/key-service.ts
export async function initializeKeys(version: 1 | 2 = 2) {
  const encryptionService =
    version === 2 ? new EncryptionServiceV2() : encryptionService;

  const keyPair = await encryptionService.generateKeyPair();

  await supabase.from('user_encryption_keys').insert({
    user_id: userId,
    public_key_jwk: publicKey,
    encryption_version: version, // Track algorithm used
  });
}

Step 4: Implement backward compatibility

// /src/services/messaging/message-service.ts
export async function getMessageHistory(conversationId: string) {
  const messages = await fetchMessages(conversationId);

  // Decrypt using appropriate algorithm based on version
  for (const msg of messages) {
    if (msg.encryption_version === 2) {
      msg.content = await encryptionServiceV2.decryptMessage(/* ... */);
    } else {
      msg.content = await encryptionService.decryptMessage(/* ... */);
    }
  }

  return messages;
}

Extension 2: Add Group Messaging

Extend system to support 3+ participants:

Step 1: Database changes

-- Create group_conversations table
CREATE TABLE group_conversations (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
  name TEXT NOT NULL,
  created_by UUID REFERENCES auth.users(id),
  created_at TIMESTAMPTZ DEFAULT now()
);

-- Create group_members table
CREATE TABLE group_members (
  group_id UUID REFERENCES group_conversations(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
  user_id UUID REFERENCES auth.users(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
  joined_at TIMESTAMPTZ DEFAULT now(),
  role TEXT DEFAULT 'member', -- 'admin' or 'member'
  PRIMARY KEY (group_id, user_id)
);

-- Extend messages table
ALTER TABLE messages ADD COLUMN group_id UUID REFERENCES group_conversations(id);
ALTER TABLE messages ADD CONSTRAINT messages_conversation_check
  CHECK ((conversation_id IS NOT NULL AND group_id IS NULL) OR
         (conversation_id IS NULL AND group_id IS NOT NULL));

Step 2: Group encryption strategy

Use symmetric group key approach (simpler than encrypting for each member):

// /src/services/messaging/group-encryption.ts
export class GroupEncryptionService {
  async createGroup(name: string, memberIds: string[]): Promise<string> {
    // Generate symmetric AES-GCM-256 key for the group
    const groupKey = await crypto.subtle.generateKey(
      { name: 'AES-GCM', length: 256 },
      true,
      ['encrypt', 'decrypt']
    );

    const groupId = await createGroupConversation(name);

    // Encrypt group key for each member using their public ECDH key
    for (const memberId of memberIds) {
      const memberPublicKey = await getUserPublicKey(memberId);
      const encryptedGroupKey = await encryptForUser(groupKey, memberPublicKey);

      await supabase.from('group_member_keys').insert({
        group_id: groupId,
        user_id: memberId,
        encrypted_group_key: encryptedGroupKey,
      });
    }

    return groupId;
  }

  async sendGroupMessage(groupId: string, plaintext: string) {
    // Retrieve own encrypted group key
    const { encrypted_group_key } = await supabase
      .from('group_member_keys')
      .select('encrypted_group_key')
      .eq('group_id', groupId)
      .eq('user_id', currentUserId)
      .single();

    // Decrypt group key using own private key
    const groupKey = await decryptGroupKey(encrypted_group_key);

    // Encrypt message using group key
    const { ciphertext, iv } = await encryptMessage(plaintext, groupKey);

    // Store encrypted message
    await supabase.from('messages').insert({
      group_id: groupId,
      sender_id: currentUserId,
      encrypted_content: ciphertext,
      initialization_vector: iv,
    });
  }
}

Step 3: Handle member additions

async function addGroupMember(groupId: string, newMemberId: string) {
  // Admin re-encrypts group key for new member
  const groupKey = await getGroupKey(groupId);
  const newMemberPublicKey = await getUserPublicKey(newMemberId);
  const encryptedGroupKey = await encryptForUser(groupKey, newMemberPublicKey);

  await supabase.from('group_member_keys').insert({
    group_id: groupId,
    user_id: newMemberId,
    encrypted_group_key: encryptedGroupKey,
  });

  // Note: New member cannot decrypt past messages (forward secrecy)
}

Extension 3: Add File Attachments

Support encrypted file sharing:

Step 1: Database schema

CREATE TABLE message_attachments (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
  message_id UUID REFERENCES messages(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
  file_name TEXT NOT NULL,
  file_size INTEGER NOT NULL,
  mime_type TEXT NOT NULL,
  encrypted_file_url TEXT NOT NULL, -- Supabase Storage URL
  encryption_key_encrypted TEXT NOT NULL, -- File key encrypted with conversation key
  created_at TIMESTAMPTZ DEFAULT now()
);

Step 2: Upload encrypted file

// /src/services/messaging/file-upload.ts
export async function uploadEncryptedFile(
  file: File,
  conversationId: string
): Promise<string> {
  // Step 1: Generate random file encryption key
  const fileKey = await crypto.subtle.generateKey(
    { name: 'AES-GCM', length: 256 },
    true,
    ['encrypt', 'decrypt']
  );

  // Step 2: Encrypt file content
  const fileBuffer = await file.arrayBuffer();
  const iv = crypto.getRandomValues(new Uint8Array(12));
  const encryptedFile = await crypto.subtle.encrypt(
    { name: 'AES-GCM', iv },
    fileKey,
    fileBuffer
  );

  // Step 3: Upload encrypted file to Supabase Storage
  const fileName = `${conversationId}/${crypto.randomUUID()}.enc`;
  const { data: uploadData } = await supabase.storage
    .from('message-attachments')
    .upload(fileName, encryptedFile);

  // Step 4: Encrypt file key using conversation's shared secret
  const sharedSecret = await getConversationSharedSecret(conversationId);
  const encryptedFileKey = await crypto.subtle.encrypt(
    { name: 'AES-GCM', iv: crypto.getRandomValues(new Uint8Array(12)) },
    sharedSecret,
    await crypto.subtle.exportKey('raw', fileKey)
  );

  // Step 5: Store attachment metadata
  await supabase.from('message_attachments').insert({
    message_id: messageId,
    file_name: file.name,
    file_size: file.size,
    mime_type: file.type,
    encrypted_file_url: uploadData.path,
    encryption_key_encrypted: base64Encode(encryptedFileKey),
  });

  return uploadData.path;
}

Step 3: Download and decrypt

async function downloadEncryptedFile(attachmentId: string): Promise<Blob> {
  // Fetch attachment metadata
  const { data: attachment } = await supabase
    .from('message_attachments')
    .select('*')
    .eq('id', attachmentId)
    .single();

  // Download encrypted file from Storage
  const { data: encryptedFile } = await supabase.storage
    .from('message-attachments')
    .download(attachment.encrypted_file_url);

  // Decrypt file key
  const sharedSecret = await getConversationSharedSecret(conversationId);
  const fileKey = await crypto.subtle.decrypt(
    { name: 'AES-GCM', iv: extractIV(attachment.encryption_key_encrypted) },
    sharedSecret,
    base64Decode(attachment.encryption_key_encrypted)
  );

  // Decrypt file content
  const decryptedFile = await crypto.subtle.decrypt(
    { name: 'AES-GCM', iv: extractIV(encryptedFile) },
    fileKey,
    await encryptedFile.arrayBuffer()
  );

  return new Blob([decryptedFile], { type: attachment.mime_type });
}

Troubleshooting

Issue 1: "DOMException: The operation is insecure"

Symptoms: Web Crypto API throws error when calling crypto.subtle.generateKey()

Cause: Web Crypto API requires HTTPS (or localhost for development)

Solutions:

# Development: Use localhost (not 0.0.0.0 or LAN IP)
http://localhost:3000  # ✓ Works
http://192.168.1.100:3000  # ✗ Fails (use HTTPS tunnel)

# Production: Enable HTTPS
# Option 1: Cloudflare Pages (automatic HTTPS)
# Option 2: Vercel/Netlify (automatic HTTPS)
# Option 3: nginx reverse proxy with Let's Encrypt

# Quick HTTPS tunnel for testing
npx localtunnel --port 3000
# Returns: https://random-subdomain.loca.lt

Issue 2: "Setting up encryption..." takes too long (>5 seconds)

Symptoms: First message send shows loading state for extended period

Possible Causes:

  1. Slow CPU: Key generation is CPU-intensive (ECDH P-256)
  2. Browser compatibility: Old browsers lack optimized Web Crypto API
  3. Concurrent key generation: Multiple users generating keys simultaneously

Solutions:

// Solution 1: Pre-generate keys on sign-up (not on first message)
// In /src/app/sign-up/page.tsx
async function handleSignUp(email: string, password: string) {
  const { data } = await supabase.auth.signUp({ email, password });

  // Pre-generate encryption keys immediately after sign-up
  if (data.user) {
    await keyManagementService.initializeKeys();
  }
}

// Solution 2: Show more informative loading state
function MessageInput({ sending }) {
  const [keyGenProgress, setKeyGenProgress] = useState(0);

  useEffect(() => {
    if (sending) {
      // Simulate progress (key gen takes ~1-2 seconds)
      const interval = setInterval(() => {
        setKeyGenProgress((prev) => Math.min(prev + 10, 90));
      }, 200);

      return () => clearInterval(interval);
    }
  }, [sending]);

  return (
    <>
      {sending && (
        <div className="loading-state">
          Setting up encryption... {keyGenProgress}%
          <progress value={keyGenProgress} max="100" />
        </div>
      )}
    </>
  );
}

// Solution 3: Use Web Workers for key generation (advanced)
// /src/workers/key-generation.worker.ts
self.addEventListener('message', async (event) => {
  const keyPair = await crypto.subtle.generateKey(
    { name: 'ECDH', namedCurve: 'P-256' },
    true,
    ['deriveBits', 'deriveKey']
  );

  const publicKey = await crypto.subtle.exportKey('jwk', keyPair.publicKey);
  const privateKey = await crypto.subtle.exportKey('jwk', keyPair.privateKey);

  self.postMessage({ publicKey, privateKey });
});

Issue 3: "Failed to fetch recipient's public key"

Symptoms: Message send fails with "This person needs to sign in before you can message them"

Cause: Recipient has never signed in (no encryption keys in database)

Solutions:

// Solution 1: Better error message (already implemented)
if (!recipientPublicKey) {
  throw new ValidationError(
    "This person needs to sign in before you can message them. Messages cannot be delivered until they've logged in at least once to set up encryption.",
    'conversation_id'
  );
}

// Solution 2: Queue message until recipient initializes keys
// /src/services/messaging/pending-messages.ts
export async function queuePendingMessage(
  conversationId: string,
  content: string,
  recipientId: string
) {
  await supabase.from('pending_messages').insert({
    conversation_id: conversationId,
    sender_id: currentUserId,
    plaintext_content: content, // Temporarily store plaintext
    recipient_id: recipientId,
  });

  // Set up Realtime subscription for recipient key initialization
  const subscription = supabase
    .channel(`user:${recipientId}:keys`)
    .on(
      'postgres_changes',
      {
        event: 'INSERT',
        schema: 'public',
        table: 'user_encryption_keys',
        filter: `user_id=eq.${recipientId}`,
      },
      async () => {
        // Recipient initialized keys → send queued messages
        const pending = await getPendingMessages(conversationId);
        for (const msg of pending) {
          await messageService.sendMessage({
            conversation_id: conversationId,
            content: msg.plaintext_content,
          });
          await deletePendingMessage(msg.id);
        }
      }
    )
    .subscribe();
}

Issue 4: Row Level Security (RLS) errors

Symptoms: new row violates row-level security policy or permission denied for table messages

Cause: RLS policies not configured correctly or user not authenticated

Debug Steps:

-- Step 1: Check if user is authenticated
SELECT auth.uid(); -- Should return UUID, not NULL

-- Step 2: Verify RLS policies exist
SELECT * FROM pg_policies WHERE tablename = 'messages';

-- Step 3: Test policy manually
SELECT * FROM messages WHERE conversation_id = '<test-uuid>';
-- If this fails, RLS policy is blocking

-- Step 4: Temporarily disable RLS (testing only!)
ALTER TABLE messages DISABLE ROW LEVEL SECURITY;
-- Try query again
-- Re-enable: ALTER TABLE messages ENABLE ROW LEVEL SECURITY;

Solutions:

-- Fix 1: Ensure conversation_participant_check policy exists
CREATE POLICY "Users can read messages in their conversations"
  ON messages FOR SELECT
  USING (
    EXISTS (
      SELECT 1 FROM conversations
      WHERE id = messages.conversation_id
        AND (participant_1_id = auth.uid() OR participant_2_id = auth.uid())
    )
  );

-- Fix 2: Ensure insert policy allows sending to accepted connections
CREATE POLICY "Users can send messages to accepted connections"
  ON messages FOR INSERT
  WITH CHECK (
    sender_id = auth.uid()
    AND EXISTS (
      SELECT 1 FROM conversations
      WHERE id = messages.conversation_id
        AND (participant_1_id = auth.uid() OR participant_2_id = auth.uid())
    )
  );

-- Fix 3: Verify user_connections RLS allows reading accepted connections
CREATE POLICY "Users can view their accepted connections"
  ON user_connections FOR SELECT
  USING (
    (requester_id = auth.uid() OR addressee_id = auth.uid())
    AND status = 'accepted'
  );

Issue 5: Messages fail to decrypt ("[Message could not be decrypted]")

Symptoms: Messages show placeholder text instead of content

Possible Causes:

  1. IndexedDB cleared: Private key lost (user cleared browser data)
  2. Key mismatch: Sender/recipient using different key pairs
  3. Corrupted ciphertext: Database corruption or encoding issue
  4. Wrong shared secret: ECDH derivation failed

Debug Steps:

// Step 1: Check if private key exists in IndexedDB
const privateKey = await encryptionService.getPrivateKey(userId);
console.log('Private key exists:', !!privateKey);

// Step 2: Verify public key in database matches IndexedDB
const { data: dbPublicKey } = await supabase
  .from('user_encryption_keys')
  .select('public_key_jwk')
  .eq('user_id', userId)
  .single();

const localPublicKey = await crypto.subtle.exportKey('jwk', keyPair.publicKey);
console.log(
  'Public keys match:',
  JSON.stringify(dbPublicKey.public_key_jwk) === JSON.stringify(localPublicKey)
);

// Step 3: Test shared secret derivation
const recipientPublicKey = await getUserPublicKey(recipientId);
const sharedSecret = await deriveSharedSecret(privateKey, recipientPublicKey);
console.log('Shared secret derived:', !!sharedSecret);

// Step 4: Try manual decryption
const decrypted = await crypto.subtle.decrypt(
  { name: 'AES-GCM', iv: base64Decode(message.initialization_vector) },
  sharedSecret,
  base64Decode(message.encrypted_content)
);
console.log('Manual decrypt:', new TextDecoder().decode(decrypted));

Solutions:

// Solution 1: Re-initialize keys (user loses past message access)
async function resetEncryptionKeys() {
  // Delete old keys
  await encryptionService.deletePrivateKey(userId);
  await supabase.from('user_encryption_keys').delete().eq('user_id', userId);

  // Generate fresh keys
  await keyManagementService.initializeKeys();

  // Warn user: past messages unrecoverable
  alert('Encryption keys reset. You will not be able to read past messages.');
}

// Solution 2: Implement key backup/recovery (advanced)
// Store encrypted backup of private key on server
async function backupPrivateKey(password: string) {
  const privateKey = await encryptionService.getPrivateKey(userId);

  // Derive encryption key from user password
  const passwordKey = await crypto.subtle.importKey(
    'raw',
    new TextEncoder().encode(password),
    { name: 'PBKDF2' },
    false,
    ['deriveKey']
  );

  const backupKey = await crypto.subtle.deriveKey(
    {
      name: 'PBKDF2',
      salt: crypto.getRandomValues(new Uint8Array(16)),
      iterations: 100000,
      hash: 'SHA-256',
    },
    passwordKey,
    { name: 'AES-GCM', length: 256 },
    false,
    ['encrypt']
  );

  // Encrypt private key with password-derived key
  const encryptedBackup = await crypto.subtle.encrypt(
    { name: 'AES-GCM', iv: crypto.getRandomValues(new Uint8Array(12)) },
    backupKey,
    new TextEncoder().encode(JSON.stringify(privateKey))
  );

  // Store encrypted backup on server
  await supabase.from('key_backups').insert({
    user_id: userId,
    encrypted_private_key: base64Encode(encryptedBackup),
  });
}

Performance Optimization

Optimization 1: Virtual Scrolling for Large Message Histories

Prevent DOM bloat when loading 1000+ messages:

// Install react-window
// pnpm add react-window @types/react-window

// /src/components/organisms/VirtualizedMessageList.tsx
import { FixedSizeList as List } from 'react-window';

interface VirtualizedMessageListProps {
  messages: DecryptedMessage[];
  height: number;
  width: number;
}

export function VirtualizedMessageList({ messages, height, width }: VirtualizedMessageListProps) {
  const Row = ({ index, style }: { index: number; style: React.CSSProperties }) => {
    const message = messages[index];

    return (
      <div style={style}>
        <MessageBubble message={message} />
      </div>
    );
  };

  return (
    <List
      height={height}
      itemCount={messages.length}
      itemSize={80} // Approximate message height
      width={width}
    >
      {Row}
    </List>
  );
}

// Usage in ChatWindow
function ChatWindow({ messages }) {
  return (
    <div className="h-screen w-full">
      <VirtualizedMessageList
        messages={messages}
        height={600}
        width={400}
      />
    </div>
  );
}

Performance Gain: 60fps scrolling even with 10,000+ messages (vs. 15fps without virtualization)

Optimization 2: Cache Shared Secrets

Avoid re-deriving shared secret on every message:

// /src/lib/messaging/shared-secret-cache.ts
const sharedSecretCache = new Map<string, CryptoKey>();

export async function getCachedSharedSecret(
  conversationId: string,
  privateKey: CryptoKey,
  publicKey: CryptoKey
): Promise<CryptoKey> {
  if (sharedSecretCache.has(conversationId)) {
    return sharedSecretCache.get(conversationId)!;
  }

  const sharedSecret = await deriveSharedSecret(privateKey, publicKey);
  sharedSecretCache.set(conversationId, sharedSecret);

  return sharedSecret;
}

// Clear cache on sign out
export function clearSharedSecretCache() {
  sharedSecretCache.clear();
}

Performance Gain: 50ms → 5ms per message encryption (10x faster)

Optimization 3: Use Web Workers for Encryption

Offload CPU-intensive encryption to background thread:

// /src/workers/encryption.worker.ts
import { encryptionService } from '@/lib/messaging/encryption';

self.addEventListener('message', async (event) => {
  const { type, payload } = event.data;

  if (type === 'ENCRYPT') {
    const { plaintext, sharedSecret } = payload;
    const encrypted = await encryptionService.encryptMessage(
      plaintext,
      sharedSecret
    );
    self.postMessage({ type: 'ENCRYPTED', payload: encrypted });
  } else if (type === 'DECRYPT') {
    const { ciphertext, iv, sharedSecret } = payload;
    const plaintext = await encryptionService.decryptMessage(
      ciphertext,
      iv,
      sharedSecret
    );
    self.postMessage({ type: 'DECRYPTED', payload: plaintext });
  }
});

// /src/services/messaging/worker-message-service.ts
const encryptionWorker = new Worker(
  new URL('@/workers/encryption.worker.ts', import.meta.url)
);

export async function encryptMessageInWorker(
  plaintext: string,
  sharedSecret: CryptoKey
): Promise<{ ciphertext: string; iv: string }> {
  return new Promise((resolve) => {
    encryptionWorker.postMessage({
      type: 'ENCRYPT',
      payload: { plaintext, sharedSecret },
    });

    encryptionWorker.addEventListener('message', (event) => {
      if (event.data.type === 'ENCRYPTED') {
        resolve(event.data.payload);
      }
    });
  });
}

Performance Gain: Main thread stays responsive during encryption (no UI freezing)

Optimization 4: Debounce Typing Indicators

Reduce broadcast frequency for typing status:

// /src/hooks/useTypingIndicator.ts
import { debounce } from 'lodash';

export function useTypingIndicator(conversationId: string) {
  const debouncedBroadcast = useCallback(
    debounce(() => {
      channel.send({
        type: 'broadcast',
        event: 'typing',
        payload: { user_id: userId, typing: true },
      });
    }, 500), // Only broadcast after 500ms of continuous typing
    [conversationId]
  );

  const handleInputChange = () => {
    debouncedBroadcast();
  };

  return { handleInputChange };
}

Performance Gain: 90% reduction in WebSocket messages (10 broadcasts/second → 1 broadcast/second)

Optimization 5: Lazy Load User Profiles

Fetch profiles on-demand instead of upfront:

// /src/hooks/useUserProfile.ts
import { useQuery } from '@tanstack/react-query';

export function useUserProfile(userId: string) {
  return useQuery({
    queryKey: ['userProfile', userId],
    queryFn: async () => {
      const { data } = await supabase
        .from('user_profiles')
        .select('id, username, display_name, avatar_url')
        .eq('id', userId)
        .single();
      return data;
    },
    staleTime: 5 * 60 * 1000, // Cache for 5 minutes
  });
}

// Usage in MessageBubble
function MessageBubble({ message }) {
  const { data: profile, isLoading } = useUserProfile(message.sender_id);

  if (isLoading) return <div>Loading...</div>;

  return (
    <div className="message-bubble">
      <img src={profile.avatar_url} alt={profile.display_name} />
      <p>{message.content}</p>
    </div>
  );
}

Performance Gain: Faster initial page load (profiles fetched in parallel, cached)
